ASTM International Board Member Alan P. Kaufman Honored with Robert J. Painter Memorial Award

Alan P. Kaufman, ASTM board member and senior vice president of technical affairs for the Toy Association, in New York, New York, USA, has been honored with the Robert J. Painter Memorial Award from ASTM International and the Society for Standards Professionals.

Kaufman was honored for his outstanding service and dedication in developing and promoting the use of voluntary consensus standards aimed at protecting children and consumers of all ages.

An ASTM International member since 2009, he is a member of the committees on consumer products (F15), sustainability (E60), and declarable substances in materials (F40). On these committees, Kaufman has served as a technical expert and helped lead efforts aimed to identify and address potential emerging safety issues.

Kaufman has served on the ASTM International board of directors since 2018. He has nearly 40 years of experience addressing product safety, quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and product testing in the global toy and children’s products industries.   

Kaufman currently serves as senior vice president of technical affairs for the Toy Association, leading the organization’s work related to toy safety standards development, the environment, supply chain, and factory processes. Before joining the Toy Association, Kaufman served as vice president of global product safety and regulatory affairs for Toys “R” Us.

In addition to ASTM International, Kaufman is part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Science Advisory Committee on Chemicals and a past president of the International Consumer Product Health and Safety Organization.
