ASTM International and America Makes to Hold Dec. 9 Workshop on Additive-Manufacturing Data

The ASTM International Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence and America Makes will jointly launch ASTM’s first Specialty Workshop Series on Additive Manufacturing Data Management and Schema on Dec. 9 in the Washington, D.C., area.

“It’s important to know that additive manufacturing is being developed in the age of data,” said Mahdi Jamshidinia, Ph.D., ASTM International’s additive manufacturing R&D project manager. “Overall, we need new methodologies and standards to build an ecosystem in which AM data can easily and securely be generated, stored, analyzed, and shared,”

“Recent advances such as digital data acquisition, automation, data analysis, and data sharing have the potential to dramatically accelerate growth and innovation in AM,” says, Alex Kitt, Ph.D., product manager for EWI, adding that consistency of data across various groups is also an issue that must be addressed.

According to Brandon Ribic, Ph.D., technology director for America Makes, full utilization of data in AM can support several applications such as data-enabled material screening, build monitoring, post-build characterization, process qualification, part certification, and data security.

Government, industry, and academic representatives will attend the event, which will specifically address AM data generation and pedigree, advanced data-driven approaches in AM, and AM database and data management systems. The event takes place at the Sheraton Tysons Hotel in Vienna, Va.
