ASTM Committees on Paints and Weathering to Sponsor Seminar on Weathering Tests for Coatings

ASTM International Committee D01 on Paint and Related Coatings, Materials and Applications, in cooperation with Committee G03 on Weathering and Durability, is sponsoring a technical seminar on recent advances in accelerated weathering tests for coatings on Jan. 23, 2007, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. The seminar will be part of the joint committee meeting that Committees D01 and G03 will be holding with Committee E12 on Color and Appearance.

Papers will be presented that describe new accelerated tests for the simulation of acid etching, tests used to determine the lightfastness of artists’ materials, new methods for the calibration of devices used to measure and control temperature in accelerated tests, new filters that provide a more realistic simulation of solar ultraviolet radiation in the critical cut-on region, and assessing variability in accelerated testing and its practical implications for interpreting results. Speakers will be available after the seminar for in-depth discussions on their research.

The following presentations are scheduled for the seminar:

• Assessing Variability in Accelerated Weathering Testing — Ken White, 3M Weathering Resource Center.
• Characterization of New Filters and Lamps for Xenon-Arc Devices — Warren D. Ketola, 3M Weathering Center.
• New Calibration Method for Black Standard and Black Panel Thermometers Used in Weathering Instruments — Artur Schoenlein, Atlas Material Testing GmbH.
• Lightfastness Testing of Artists’ Materials, Results, Unanswered Questions and Current Research — Mark Gottsegen, chair, ASTM Subcommittee D01.57 on Artist Paints and Related Materials
• Refined Acid Etch Procedure Enhances Correlation — Patrick Brennan, Q-Panel Corporation (one of the co-authors, Donald Campbell, BASF; John Boisseau, BASF; or, Jeffrey Quill, Q-Lab Corporation, may be the presenter).

For further information, contact Timothy Brooke, manager, Technical Committee Operations, ASTM International (phone: 610/832-9729; tbrooke@astm.org). Committees D01 and G03 will meet Jan. 21-23, 2007, in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
