Proposed ASTM International Standard Answers Need for Testing Stent Kink Resistance

A proposed ASTM International standard will answer the need for a standardized test method that addresses the kink resistance of endovascular stents and stent grafts. The proposed standard (WK70150) is being developed by ASTM’s committee on medical and surgical materials and devices (F04) and will provide detailed, standardized methods for testing kink resistance.

ASTM International Honored Patricia Edwards with the Margaret Dana Award

ASTM International’s consumer products committee (F15) honored Patricia Edwards, voluntary standards coordinators for the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), with the Margaret Dana Award. 

Edwards was recognized for her deep commitment to standards development and consumer product safety and for acting as a driving force for continuous standards improvement. 

ASTM International Honors Bala Muralikrishnan with James A. Thomas President’s Leadership Award

Bala Muralikrishnan, mechanical engineer for the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), was recently awarded the 2020 ASTM International James A. Thomas President’s Leadership Award.

ASTM International Awards $2,500 in Grants to University Students for Standards Projects

ASTM International announced five $500 grants for university students to help with senior or graduate design projects that contain an ASTM International standards component. 

“These grants allow ASTM International to support students who are directly engaging with our standards in real-world scenarios as they work on capstone projects,” said Travis Murdock, academic outreach coordinator. “The goals of these innovative projects, from accessibility-focused technology to helmet safety, support what we strive to do every day, help the world work better.”

ASTM International and Auburn University were awarded more than $260,000 in funding from America Makes for the development of additive manufacturing (AM) cybersecurity training.

ASTM International and RTCA To Collaborate on Detect and Avoid Capability for Drones

Global standards organization ASTM International and RTCA announced a collaboration that allows for the joint development of consensus standards for smaller unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS), also known as drones.

The collaboration would focus on an aviation system designed to provide detect and avoid (DAA) capability for drones operating beyond visual line of sight. Operational performance requirements and test procedures are being developed jointly for the new system, which is known as ACAS sXu.

Betsy L. Hoppe Honored with ASTM International Distinguished Service Award

ASTM International presented the Kenneth J. Boedecker, Jr. Distinguished Service Award to Betsy L. Hoppe, quality systems manager for Steelscape, LLC. Hoppe was honored in recognition of her exemplary contributions to the success of the metallic-coated iron and steel products committee (A05). 

Jacqueline H. Beckley Honored by ASTM International with David R. Peryam Award

ASTM International presented the David R. Peryam Award to Jacqueline H. Beckley, chief innovation officer at The Understanding & Insight Group, for her outstanding contributions to the field of basic and applied sensory science.

ASTM International Signs Letter of Cooperation with Indian Rubber Manufacturers Research Association

Recently, representatives from global standards organization ASTM International and the Indian Rubber Manufacturers Research Association (IRMRA) signed a Letter of Cooperation (LoC). The LoC will lead to a closer working relationship between ASTM and IRMRA.

The LoC was signed by Katharine Morgan, president, ASTM International and Dr. Kasilingam Rajkumar, director, IRMRA.

The partnership will promote enhanced support for rubber and rubber-related technology, in activities pertaining to ASTM International’s rubber and rubber-like materials committee (D11). 

Proposed ASTM International Standard Will Support Classification of Recycled Polyethylene Materials

A proposed ASTM International standard will aid in the identification of recycled polyethylene materials. The proposed standard (WK74657) presents a classification system that is capable of indicating total recycled content, material origin, physical properties, quality metrics, and regulatory guidance.
